Hamilton City, New Zealand

Donna Pokere-Phillips

I am running for the Maaori Ward and Mayor of Hamilton City Council.

I have been living in Hamilton City for over 25 years and love my city. I have worked at a community level for many years as an advocate and I am Co-Leader for the Outdoors & Freedoms Party.

This government is hell bent on bringing forward the three waters reform of our waste, storm and drinking water while ignoring the “firestorm of opposition”. Hamilton needs a fearless leader to take on this government who wants to steal our assets, I am that leader.

We have a housing crisis, over 1000 families do not have a place to call home. Current leadership have stated our civic building is not fit for purpose and want to sell it. I will utilise this asset to rehouse these families.

I will fight to keep local assets in local hands. I will push for a social housing program.

Mana Whenua role in our community needs to be reflected in all levels of decision making. I would advocate to establish a joint decision-making process which puts our community in the driver’s seat. I will ensure rate payers money is not captured creating communities of haves and have nots.

I am passionate about my community, I and I will work hard to advocate for our diverse communities.

Every single person in Hamilton want to live in a warm affordable home. If you invest in a new build to help alleviate the housing crisis then Council should invest in you. I will use Council’s rates remission policy that allows Council to remit rates on residential properties to reward you with a Rate Rebate.

Hamilton City Council has seen a rate rise of over 17.8% over the last few years, this year alone the average rate increase is 4.9% with the increase in the price of living and families falling below the poverty line, balancing the books has never been more important for our Council.

“We all have to learn to live within our means including HCC, I will work hard to reduce your rates and put more money back in your pocket”. Council wants to spend $6 billion dollars over the next few years we will need to review and reprioritise our spend, just like every other household in New Zealand.

I am the Co-Leader for the Outdoors & Freedom Party

I have answered this question in the first answer.

This government is hell bent on bringing forward the three waters reform of our waste, storm and drinking water while ignoring the “firestorm of opposition”. Hamilton needs a fearless leader to take on this government who wants to steal our assets, I am that leader.

The government will create four mega entities to manage water, this will also create mega iwi within these structures, usurping the mana of local marae and hapuu. This asset grab by the government is not good for local government nor is it good for our mana whenua people.

I am absolutely against three waters.

I fought hard for Maaori wards, I am running for one of two Maaori wards, this allows Maaori to be part of the decision making process. No longer are Maaori ruled by the majority, this is Te Tiriti in action. Kia ora!

Mana Whenua have been co governing assets since the first Treaty settlement in 1995 and doing so very successfully. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is an enabler of co governance to deny this is denying Te Tiriti of Waitangi where Maaori are given full exclusive and undisturbed possession of their Lands and Estates Forests Fisheries and other properties which they may collectively or individually possess so long as it is their wish and desire to retain these in their possession.

The Three Waters asset grab by Central Government has strained the relationship with local governments around the country. This is not good for democracy as local government have been forced into a position to fight their central government counterparts to protect their water assets built up over generations.

The price of living has hit everyone, reprioritising the $6 billion spend over the next few years should be a priority, lowering council rates should be a priority.

Politicians are not rated highly and rightfully or wrongfully are not trusted by our local communities. Bringing integrity back to politics is important, if you say you are going to do something then it is important to put your ‘money where your mouth is’.

Life can take you all over the country for different reasons, family, work, business or pleasure. Preferentially people should be living in Hamilton but no one should be denied an opportunity to run for Council. My assumption is people would have lived in the City at some stage in their life, and more importantly understand the community they are standing and advocating for. I think ultimately it is up to the public to chose if they should be elected or not.

Democracy demonstrates that if a person is elected, and the public continue to show faith in them then democracy wins. Putting limitations on democracy is not democracy in the true sense of the word. No I do not support Councillor’s serving, say three terms.
